Idaho Anglers Reminded to
Kill Walleye Caught In Rivers

New Rules Allowing Spearfishing for
Walleye & Smallmouth Starts Tuesday

Salmon and steelhead managers are concerned about the upriver movement of walleye, a voracious predator of juvenile fish.

Idaho Fish and Game is reminding anglers to kill and keep all walleye caught in salmon and steelhead rivers.

The invasive species feeds on salmon and steelhead and the walleye population is growing in Idaho. Last year 80 walleye were caught in the Snake River from Hells Canyon to Lewiston. The predatory fish was also caught on the Lower Salmon River all the way to Riggins in central Idaho. Some of the walleye are up to 30 inches.

New rules in Idaho will soon allow spearfishing for walleye and smallmouth bass locally in Clearwater Region rivers with no bag, length or possession limits. That new fishery starts on Tuesday July 1st.

Walleye are migrating into Idaho from Washington up the Snake where the population is growing rapidly.

Anglers who catch walleye in Idaho are asked to report those fish to the Idaho Fish and Game office in Lewiston. Officials want to know where they are caught, their size and request a photo of the fish. That information can be emailed to marika.dobos@idfg.idaho.gov
