25 Years Ago: BPA Withdrew Interruptible Energyby Living Section, 25 Years AgoThe Oregonian, March 10, 2005 |
25 YEARS AGO: 1980 SALEM -- Oregon's unemployment rated dropped to 6.3 percent last month from 6.7 percent in January, the state unemployment Division said Tuesday.
The national jobless rate last month was 6.0 percent, down from 6.2 in January. Reynolds Metals announced Thursday that it would lay off 120 employees at its Troutdale and Longview, Wash., aluminum plants effective at midnight.
The layoffs were caused by the notification by Bonneville Power Administration that Reynolds' interruptible energy supplies would not be restored in the foreseeable future.
BPA withdrew interruptible energy from the plants in July 1979 because of low stream flows.
