Tax Break for Alcoa Continuesby StaffMukitelo Beacon, March 29, 2006 |
Gregoire, at the Alcoa Intalco Works facility in Ferndale, signed a bill that extends tax relief for aluminum smelters (HB 2348). Under current law, tax incentives for aluminum smelters will expire in January 2007; the bill extends those incentives until 2012.
Due to electricity rate increases and decreases in the price of aluminum, employment in the aluminum smelter industry in Washington has dropped 81 percent since 1998.
With this bill, Alcoa will be able to request better electricity rates from the BPA.
