Start on Dam Removal Now

by Joe Guarisco

Ice Harbor Lock and Dam, 10 miles up the Snake River from its confluence with the Columbia River, is under consideration for breaching. (ACOE photo) The latest salmon plan for the Columbia and Snake rivers is a repackaged version of the status quo and does more to waste time then take needed actions to recover these fish.

Planning for a roadmap to a process to study dam removal is not enough. We need to take a serious look at this option for the near, not distant, future. Our salmon and communities need real and lasting solutions now. Done right, dam removal on the lower Snake River can provide new regional opportunities and alternatives while recovering a vital natural resource.
