Citing the "cultural, environmental and economic legacy" of wild salmon, the Seattle City Council called for the partial removal of four Lower Snake River dams that encumber the fish's migratory route.

At least 165 sockeye salmon made the 900-mile trip to the Sawtooth Basin from the Pacific Ocean this summer, according to Idaho biologists. The run was larger than any since the fish was placed on the endangered list in 1991.
