Snake River Sockeye Salmon Run
Well Above 10-Year Average

by Evan Ellis
Big Country News, July 28, 2023

(Darin Oswald) Two decades ago the sockeye destined to become one of the most famous salmon in the West took a solitary 900-mile swim up the Columbia and Snake rivers. LEWISTON - This summer's sockeye salmon run through the Lower Snake River is well above the 10-year average.

Idaho Fish and Game reports that nearly 1,300 sockeye bound for Central Idaho have crossed Lower Granite Dam South of Colfax.

The first sockeye to return to the Sawtooth Basin near Stanley arrived this week.

Historically about half the run that crosses Lower Granite makes it to the spawning grounds. The endangered sockeye swim 900 miles and climb over 6,000 feet every summer from the Pacific to the Stanley area.
