The Water, Wildlife, and Fisheries Subcommittee of the House Natural Resources Committee held a hearing concerning proposed legislation labeled Defending Our Dams Act (H.R. 2073) on 3 September 2025.

The testimony and questions asked of witnesses were a mix of facts and misinformation/disinformation.

Shannon Wheeler -- Nez Perce Tribal Chairman -- established the relevant baseline -- the democrats were well briefed and provided worthwhile comments -- the republicans offered their typical uniformed responses.

Lower Snake River Dam removal has nothing to do with the number of salmon passing Bonneville Dam on the lower Columbia River in 1938 -- the first year of operation.

Dam removal is about ensuring wild salmon and steelhead populations that reside in the Snake River drainage are saved from extinction. The current trajectory is bleak. Those extant populations are exclusive in the Columbia River drainage by supporting the furthest distance and highest elevation migration.

Habitat supporting those wild populations is of paramount quality in the remaining Columbia River drainage.

As Chairman Wheeler opined - decades of salmon science calls for removing the lower Snake River dams to not only keep them from extinction but allow them to flourish.
