Steelhead Run Dives

by Eric Barker
Lewiston Tribune, September 19, 2012

Fall forecast has low numbers not seen since 1999

Snake River Chinook Salmon in-river Survival 1964-2010. Fisheries managers have again scaled back their prediction for the number of steelhead that will return to the Columbia and Snake river basins this fall.

They now expect only 205,000 steelhead to pass Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River between July 1 and Oct. 31. The run hasn't been that low since 1999 when the Bonneville count for the same time period was 198,500. For perspective, in both 2001 and 2009, more steelhead returned past Lower Granite Dam on the Snake River than are forecast to return to Bonneville Dam this year. But those were outstanding years.
