Bill to Fund $40 Million for
Idaho Salmon Recovery Reintroduced

Idaho Farm Bureau News, May 2001

Washington,D.C. -- Congressman Mike Simpson has reintroduced legislation to fund salmon habitat restoration for northwestern states.

The bill passed the House of Representatives last year but failed to be considered in the Senate. Simpson added Idaho as one of five states that would receive money during subcommittee hearings in the 106th Congress.

The bill, written by Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.), authorizes Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California and Idaho to receive $40 million each for salmon restoration as part of the Pacific Salmon Recovery Acot of 2001 (H.R. 1157).

According to the bill, federal funding would be transferred to the Idaho Office of Conservation and Species, directed by the governor's office. The state receives 85 percent of the money and Native American tribes receive 15 percent.
