Mainstem Columbia River

CLACKAMAS, Ore. -- State fishery officials have decided to shut down fishing for fall chinook salmon on the Columbia River below Bonneville Dam through the end of the year.
The shutdown will be extended from Bonneville upstream to Pasco, Washington on Thursday.
The reason is that the run of upriver bright fall chinook is turning out to be about 40 percent below preseason predictions, and catching any more fish would leave too few fish to spawn the next generation.
