Energy Northwest Earthquake Drill in Richland

CGS Emergency Planning Zone: 10 mile RICHLAND, Wash. - Workers at Energy Northwest participated in a detailed drill Tuesday to simulate an earthquake response at the Columbia Generating Station.

The drill simulated the steps that would be taken if an earthquake ever caused a release in radioactive material from the plant's reactor.

As part of the drill, a joint information center is set up to work with Benton and Franklin Counties covering all levels of emergency services.

"We have an established organization. We have procedures, we have standard things that we know how to do so that we can take care of the health and safety of the public. So we can take care of the plant, so we can get information out to the people," said Energy Northwest Senior Engineer Desiree Wolfgramm.

Energy Northwest conducts drills like this several times a year at the generating station.
