No Reason to Keep Dams,
Endanger Salmon

by LuVerne D. Grussing
Idaho Statesman, August 1, 2007

Thank you for reinvigorating the debate on removing the four dams on the Snake River. This debate should have ended long ago, with the removal of the dams. There is no justification whatsoever for keeping them.

The "seaport" in Lewiston is a joke. Whatever minimal viability it has as a port is attained only through a massive infusion of tax dollars for dredging the channel every year.

As a resident of Nez Perce County, I am forced to subsidize the operation of the port through my property taxes, and I am tired of seeing my tax dollars being used to kill the salmon and steelhead which are such an important part of our culture and our history. I prefer to leave a legacy of living rivers and fish, rather than ugly concrete river plugs and artificial lakes.

The debate has gone on long enough. Tired arguments in support of the Snake River dams rely on hyperbole and outright lies. Scientists have already breached the arguments to keep the dams. Now its time breach the dams.
