Dams a Focus in the Senate Race

(Rajah Bose photo) Mike McGavick, a Republican hopeful for the U.S. Senate, appeared at Ice Harbor Dam on Tuesday to talk about his opposition to breaching the four lower Snake River dams. ICE HARBOR DAM, Wash. - Decision 2006 is just weeks away and our area's dams were Tuesday's hot topic between U.S. Senate candidates Maria Cantwell and Mike McGavick.

Overlooking the Ice Harbor Dam, McGavick said he wants eastern Washington voters to know he supports keeping the dams where they are. That is what Maria Cantwell's camp is saying too.

Both McGavick and Idaho Senator Larry Craig said our region depends on the clean hydro-power the dams produce. But McGavick claims Cantwell has not been proactive in her stance to save the dams. Her camp said since 2000 she's made an effort to fight the breach.

"The bottom line is there are courts in this country considering whether to breach these dams to save the salmon the fact is we can have salmon and dams," said McGavick.

He also said he's in favor of developing more hatchery technology and research to keep releasing farmed salmon back into the eco-system.

We could not reach Cantwell representatives for their input on hatcheries.
