Nez Perce Tribe Likes Anti-dredge Order

by Associated Press

LAPWAI -- Nez Perce tribal leaders say they're glad there won't be any dredging on the Snake River in eastern Washington this winter.

A federal court is forcing the U-S Corps of Engineers to consider the cumulative impacts of this dredging on the entire Federal Columbia River Power System.

U-S District Judge Robert Lasnik blocked the planned dredging.

The corps has not decided if it will appeal his decision.

The corps has been trying to dredge the Snake River's shipping channel and the ports of Lewiston, Clarkston and Whitman County for the past four years.

But salmon advocates claim the dredging will harm threatened and endangered salmon and steelhead.
