Idaho Fish and Game
Warns of Jaw Tags in Salmon

by Jaclyn Brandt
KIVI TV, June 28, 2012

Idaho Fish and Games wants to let anglers fishing for Chinook salmon in the lower Salmon, Little Salmon and South Fork Salmon rivers know that they may encounter fish with jaw tags in their lower jaw.

If you catch a jaw-tagged fish, you are not required to report the tags to Idaho Fish and Game or to return the tags.

"The jaw tags are applied to adult fish at Lower Granite Dam and are part of a study to assess PIT tag retention rates among returning adult Chinook salmon between Lower Granite Dam and their adult trapping destination," said the department.

Results from this work help managers make accurate in-season estimates of adult hatchery salmon returns.
