U.S. Seeks Firms to Study Salmon Survival Through New-design Turbines at 603-MW Ice Harbor Hydro Project by Staff HydroWorld.com, August 3, 2014

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeks information on firms able to characterize fish passage environment and to perform acoustic telemetry evaluation of juvenile salmon survival through new-design turbine runners at the 603-MW Ice Harbor Dam hydroelectric project. Responses are due Aug. 17.

The Corps' Walla Walla District took information in April on firms able to perform biological assessments of the new turbine runner designs at Ice Harbor based on computational fluid dynamic model outputs.

Voith Hydro Inc. has completed design and model testing with the Corps' Hydroelectric Design Center and the Walla Walla District for Kaplan runners at Ice Harbor. The three entities collaborated to develop the designs of a new fixed-blade propeller and a new adjustable-blade turbine runner designed with biological criteria to be safer for fish passage. A fixed-blade runner is to be installed in Unit 2 and new Kaplan runners are to be installed in Units 1 and 3 beginning in 2017.

In a sources sought notice, the Walla Walla District now seeks information on firms able to perform studies to provide information for validating the design process, quantifying improvements in the design in terms of reduced barotrauma and strike potential, and estimating turbine passage survival through risk assessment of barotrauma and blade strike injury and mortality that juvenile salmonids might experience during turbine passage. Responses will be used to determine the interest and availability of small businesses to perform the work.
