Fish and Families at Stake

by Sharon Schaub
The Oregonian, May 29, 2007

The federal agencies' oversight on recovering salmon in the Columbia-Snake River Basin has proved inadequate and illegal again and again. Coming from an avid sportfishing family, this issue is close to my heart. This passion has led to employment in a recreational industry that employs tens of thousands who are utterly dependent on the health of our rivers.

One in five Oregon families bonds through sportfishing, and many thousands more are tied to the rivers in this way. By choosing to ignore this issue, the Northwest congressional delegation will be making a choice to let salmon continue their decline, waste more of our tax dollars and keep local communities and families like mine on the brink.

Congressional action is needed to examine recovery and make substantive policy choices.
