Fall Chinook Salmon Retention to Close at Buoy 10 on Columbia River by Bill Monroe The Oregonian, August 29, 2022

Anglers will no longer be allowed to keep fall chinook salmon at Buoy 10 beginning Wednesday morning.

State managers hurriedly met by telephone Monday after reviewing weekend catches and came to an emergency decision. Torrid sport landings of fall chinook between Buoy 10 and West Puget Island over the past two weeks led to the closure.

Tucker Jones, Columbia River Program Manager for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, said daily catches at times have been the third highest since 2001.

Biologists are protecting lower-river stocks of fall chinook, which Jones said have lingered in the estuary longer than usual.

"If we don't take it down at Buoy 10, we'll have to shut the whole system down," he said of fall chinook fishing.

Coho salmon are beginning to show up in the Buoy 10 fishery and remain legal to fish for and retain.

Chinook salmon retention is also closed in the ocean off the mouth of the Columbia River, but coho fishing remains open outside.
