Fall Chinook Season to Open in August by Andrew Weeks 1310 KLIX, July 31, 2017

JEROME, Idaho -- Some 27,000 chinook salmon are expected to return to the Snake River Basin this fall -- and anglers will have a chance to catch their share starting Aug. 18, when the fall season opens on parts of the Snake, Clearwater and Salmon rivers.

This is the ninth year of fall chinook fishing in the Gem State. Idaho Fish and Game commissioners approved the chinook season last Thursday, July 27.

According to the department, areas opening include:

• The Snake River from the Washington/Idaho border upstream to Cliff Mountain Rapids (about a mile downstream of Hells Canyon Dam). Scheduled to remain open until notice or Oct. 31, whichever comes first.

• The Snake River from Hells Canyon Dam downstream to Cliff Mountain Rapids. Scheduled to remain open until notice or Nov. 17, whichever comes first.

• Clearwater River, from its mouth upstream to Memorial Bridge. Scheduled to remain open until notice or Oct. 31, whichever comes first.

• Salmon River, from its mouth upstream about three-fourths of a mile to Eye of the Needle Rapids. Scheduled to remain open until notice or Oct. 31, whichever comes first.
