Far Reaching Impact
by Oliveo Reglet
|
The impact of the Biden Administration’s support for the eventual breaching of the Snake River dams goes beyond saving declining salmon populations to rescuing an entire ecosystem on the brink of devastation, ("Conservationists, tribes say deal with Biden administration is a road map to breach Snake River dams," Dec. 15).
The removal of the lower four Snake River dams is the only way to halt the heartbreaking decline of the Southern resident orca population in the Puget Sound, who are dealing with the threat of starvation in addition to other challenges. The removal of these dams will allow salmon to access their ancestral spawning grounds, giving struggling populations a chance to recover and revitalizing vital breeding habitats. This restoration effort is nothing short of a lifeline for the resident orcas, whose primary food source will finally have the opportunity to rebound.
