Anglers fishing the Clearwater for Chinook salmon. LEWISTON - It's the right time if you want to catch some salmon.

Anglers are taking advantage of what Idaho Fish and Game is calling a late run of Chinook salmon.

Officials at Fish and Game said as of May 11th, 87,000 fish had passed Bonneville Dam, 22,000 at Ice Harbor and 10,000 at Lower Granite. Those numbers are relatively low, but officials say a higher percentage are finding their way to Idaho and fisheries personnel say now's the time.

They're estimating about 80,000 hatchery fish and 20,000 wild fish for the season and say the lower Clearwater, where a number of people are anchoring their boats, is a good place to start.

Other information and weekly fish counts are on Idaho Fish and Game's fisheries homepage.
