Hatchery Spring Chinook Fishery Reopens Saturday in Columbia Mainstem Above Bonneville Dam by Mark Yuasa Seattle Times, May 28, 2014

The Columbia River mainstem above Bonneville Dam will reopen this Saturday (May 31) for hatchery-marked spring chinook and steelhead fishing.

State Fish and Wildlife decided to extend the fishery another two weeks through June 15 along the river for more than 160 miles above Bonneville.

The sport fishing season had closed on May 9, but state fishery officials approved reopening the season by shifting a portion of the upriver catch allocation from the lower river fishery below Bonneville.

The allocation of 750 spring chinook should keep the fishery open until the summer salmon season begins June 16.

The limit is one adult hatchery chinook in a daily catch limit of two adult fish. All sockeye, and wild salmon and steelhead must be released.

Boat fishing will be open above Bonneville Dam from the Tower Island power lines upstream to the Washington/Oregon state line, 17 miles upriver from McNary Dam. Bank anglers can also fish in this area, and off the bank between Bonneville Dam and the power lines.

Fisheries officials boosted the inseason run size to 230,000 upriver spring chinook compared to a preseason forecast of 227,000.
