Bonneville Chinook Numbers
are Mind-boggling

by Henry Miller
Statesman Journal, September 11, 2014

Billy Monroe of Gresham watched Wednesday as some of that day's 30,068 fall chinook salmon (plus 7,500 coho and 6,000 steelhead) passed the viewing windows at Bonneville Dam's visitor center off Interstate 84. (Bill Monroe photo) On Monday, 67,521 fall Chinook passed through the ladder at Bonneville Dam, most since first count after dam built in 1938.

Sunday's record of 67,024 lasted just a day.

The previous one-day high had been 63,870 set Sept. 9, 2013.

Tuesday was no slouch, either, with 45,809 going through the ladder.

That's, wait for it, 180,354 in three days.

Numbers were supplies by the Northwestern Division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Bonneville Power Administration.
