Energy Northwest Pays
Record State Tax Amount

by Staff
Tri-City Herald, June 1, 2015

Steam is released from the Columbia Generating Station near Richland. Energy Northwest set a record for the largest privilege tax sum ever paid by the agency to the state of Washington on Monday, $4.9 million.

The annual tax is levied on public power electricity producers for the privilege of generating electricity in the state. The amount of privilege tax paid is tied to the amount of electricity generated.

The nuclear power plant near Richland has set generation records for three straight years, contributing to the record tax amount.

Energy Northwest also produced electricity at the Nine Canyon Wind Project, the Packwood Lake Hydroelectric Project and the White Bluffs solar Station. But the Columbia Generating Station nuclear power plant produced 96 percent of the total power generated by Energy Northwest. It is provided at cost to the Bonneville Power Administration for resale to customers in Western states.

The privilege taxes from the nuclear plant go to 39 state jurisdictions, including $2.16 million to the state school fund and $495,817 to the state's general fund. The remaining 44.8 percent of the total taxes go to jurisdictions within 35 miles of the nuclear power plant, including counties, cities, fire districts and library districts.
