Coast Guard is monitoring grounded K Line bulker for pollution in Columbia River The US Coast Guard (USCG) is monitoring for pollution a K Line bulker that ran aground on Monday in the main shipping channel of the Columbia River in Washington state.

The Sparna (54,881 dwt, built 2004) grounded in a narrow part of the river near Cathlamet. It was loaded with a cargo of grain.

The vessel was making its way outbound towards the Pacific Ocean and had a pilot on board when the incident happened.

The ship took on some water but the fuel tanks appeared to not be damaged, nor was there any sign of spill. Nevertheless USCG is keeping a keen eye out in case of pollution in the river. No injuries were reported.

Two tugs stablilized the vessel and repairs will be undertaken where it sits. Traffic on the river has not been disturbed by the grounding. USCG will investigate what caused it. Related Pages:
