Bounty in Effect Again on Pikeminnows
by Associated PressKIVI TV, May 4, 2009 |
PORTLAND, Ore. - It's open season again on northern pikeminnows, a voracious breed of fish that eats millions of young salmon and steelhead in the Columbia and Snake rivers.
The pikeminnows have a price on their heads. Anglers are paid $4 per fish nine inches or larger for the first 100. The price gradually goes to $8 per fish as an angler catches and turns in more. The program is funded by the Bonneville Power Administration.
The fish must be caught in the Columbia River below Priest Rapids Dam and in the Snake below Hells Canyon Dam.
Since 1990, more than 3 million pikeminnows have been caught through the program, resulting in a reduction in pikeminnow predation estimated at 38%.
