Bailey New Chairman of Washington Grain Commission by Matthew Weaver Capital Press, January 5, 2018

Gary Bailey of St. John, Wash., is the new chairman of the Washington Grain Commission board.

SPOKANE -- Gary Bailey became the new chairman of the Washington Grain Commission at its Jan. 4 meeting.

Bailey, who joined the commission in 2015, said he hopes to "help keep the ship running in the same direction."

"We're doing great work," he said.

Bailey, of St. John, represents Whitman County on the commission. He farms with his brother, Mark.

He replaces Mike Miller of Ritzville as chairman. Miller continues on the commission board, representing Adams, Chelan, Douglas, Grant and Okanogan counties.

The chairman serves a two-year term.

Bailey said he was approached to go through the leadership positions when he joined the commission.

"Everyone here is very capable and willing to do that," he said. "It was my turn, I guess."

Bailey said his goal is to "keep an open mind -- there'll be new projects that come on board -- and help as I can."

What is the biggest need he sees?

"We need a good price, but that's a really difficult one to do because you can't control what the world is producing," he said. "We need to continue to work on our quality and keep it up, because the quality wheats seem to still have a good market."
