Additional Environmental Studies Wanted
for Hells Canyon Dams

by Staff and Wire
KPVI.com, July 6, 2004

The Federal Energy Regulation Commission has ordered additional environmental impact studies of Idaho Power Company's Hells Canyon dams.

The commission told the utility in early May, as part of their re-licensing of the dams, they must complete 14 additional studies.

But the company objected, claiming some studies were unwarranted.

The commission staff dismissed those objections last week and said they did not agree with the company's argument that the dams have no effect on downstream salmon migration, and water quality or temperature.

Environmental groups agree with the commission, which says the dams could adversely affect salmon habitat.

Idaho Power's, Craig Jones, says he is unsure if the company will appeal the decision to the full commission.
