Environmental Group Threatens to Sue Forest Officials
Over Sewage Emitted Into Selway River

by Associated Press

LEWISTON, Idaho -- An environmental group is vowing to sue the Nez Perce National Forest over allegations the agency is allowing undertreated sewage to be discharged into the Selway River and South Fork of the Red River.

Moscow-based Friends of the Clearwater sent letters to forest officials Tuesday alerting them of plans to take the agency to court.

The group accuses the agency of repeatedly violating the federal Clean Water Act by allowing treated sewage and wastewater into the rivers.

Friends of the Clearwater member Gary Macfarlane told the Lewiston Tribune that agency facilities for handling sewage and wastewater our old, outdated and don't function properly.

The agency is working to get permission to update the wastewater system for at least one facility.

Agency Spokeswoman Elayne Murphy declined to comment on potential litigation.
