New Weirs for Salmon
by StaffWheat Life, May 2008 |
John Day Dam and Lower Monumental Dam received spillway weirs as efforts continue in improving migration for juvenile salmon in the Snake and Columbia Rivers, according to the Columbia Basin Bulletin. Juvenile salmon and steelhead using the surface overflow route provided by the spillway weir can pass the dam near the water's surface under lower acclerations and lower pressures than passing through normal spill providing a more efficient and less stressful route while reducing migration delays at the dam.
