Opening of Lower Monumental Dam Lock Pushed Back

Walla Walla Union Bulletin, March 14, 2011

(Andy Porter) Tour participants look over the edge of Lower Monumental Dam's cavernous navigation lock during a tour Wednesday. It was a rare opportunity to see the structure almost completely empty of water. KAHLOTUS -- Final adjustments to a new lock gate at Lower Monumental Dam have pushed back the date of its reopening, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials said.

The lock is now scheduled to return to service at 5 p.m. March 21, Corps officials said in a release. The gate was scheduled to reopen Tuesday, but more time was needed to complete alignments of the bottom and top gate seals.

The lock went out of service on Dec. 10 to allow replacement of the downstream gate. The task was one of several major rehabilitation and repair projects at several dams which closed the entire river system to traffic.

The system remains on schedule to return to service for river traffic between Portland and Lewiston, Idaho, when The Dalles navigation lock reopens on March 23, Corps officials said.
