Henry Miller Nails It

by Devin Dinihanian
Statesman Journal, November 14, 2008

Thanks to Henry Miller for his insightful column Nov. 7 ("Science, curiosity and the 2008 vote"). It is indeed refreshing that a new wind is blowing in D.C. and that better days are ahead of us.

It's time to again let science drive our policy decisions instead of politics, and Oregon's Senator-elect Jeff Merkley has said much the same for the four dams on the lower Snake River in eastern Washington.

Salmon are important to our region in so many ways and they must be protected and restored. And if the science says we need to take out the four lower Snake River dams to do so, Merkley recognizes that that's how we will need to proceed. The limited benefits those dams provide can be easily replaced, but the salmon runs cannot. Once they're gone, they're gone.

Thanks to Jeff Merkley for recognizing that we cannot allow that to happen.
