Corps Extends Bonneville Lock Closure to Midnight by Dean Brickey East Oregonian, March 24, 2011

CASCADE LOCKS -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has extended the closure of Bonneville Dam's navigation lock at Columbia River Mile 145 by 24 hours. The lock is expected to reopen at 11:59 p.m. today.

Scott Clemans, spokesman for the Corps' Portland District, reported the extended closure Wednesday afternoon.

The Corps closed the lock Sunday to repair damaged girders on the upstream gate. The gate was damaged last Thursday during a routine operation to flush debris out of the upstream channel and through the lock. The top of the gate was exposed to high water pressure and buckled when drain valves pulling water into the lock failed to close.

Clemans said Wednesday the repairs are taking longer than planned because of difficulty loosening the gate leaves' diagonal braces, a necessary precursor to repairing the damaged girders.

The Corps will issue an update Thursday afternoon if conditions warrant, he said.
